Research collaborations
I head the Communities and Resource Governance Programme at Dakshin Foundation and our projects enquire into environment and conservation laws, policies and practices. Sustained direct engagement and collaboration with multiple actors in this space direct our research priorities at Dakshin. These projects are attempts to understand and bring about justice in conservation and development, through knowledge and practices generated in academic and practitioner spaces. Broadly I work on the following subjects:
Fisheries (transformations, development, management, rights)
Coastal environmentalism (theory and practice)
Infrastructure projects in coastal areas - impacts, contestations, growth and regulation
Human-wildlife conflicts in marine spaces most evident in the making of protected areas and regulations within fisheries.
Environmental regulations such as the precautionary principle, environmental impact assessments, regulatory bureaucracies and capacities
Civil society collaborations
In India, I've had the opportunity to work in multiple geographies with a range of civil society organisations, associations and individuals, at the grassroots but also with networks and coalitions organised across scales of ecosystems, states, and the country such as the National Campaign for the Protection of Coasts. I have held the position of India-representative (marine issues) for IUCN's World Commission on Protected Areas and TILCEPA.
Indian Ocean collaborations
I am the Coordinator and co-PI on an ongoing initiative titled the Southern Collective - an Indian Ocean Collaboratory for the social sciences. The website of the Southern Collective hosts a range of exciting sub-projects which this 'collaboratory' comprising academics and civil society groups put together. It's a work in progress towards democratising knowledge about maritime worlds, crafted during pandemic disruption.
